What to bring to a Medicare conversation

A short checklist to help you prepare for a conversation about your coverage options.

Start with your questions

You do not need to learn every Medicare term before asking for help. Write down the questions that brought you here, whether you are approaching 65, leaving an employer plan, or reviewing coverage you already have.

Bring the details you want to compare

Make a list of your preferred doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and prescriptions. The Medicare Plan Finder can use prescription details to estimate plan costs. This information can make a comparison more useful than looking only at a plan name or advertised premium.

Think about your priorities

Consider the monthly amount you are comfortable paying, the services you want to understand, and any upcoming changes that may affect your coverage. Keep copies of current plan documents nearby so you can ask specific questions.

Ask how to share sensitive information

A website contact form is a place to ask for a conversation. You do not need to include your Medicare number, Social Security number, medical records, or a full medication list in a general message.

Your preparation checklist

  • Your ZIP code, desired coverage start date, and dates of any retirement or employer coverage change.
  • Doctors and facilities you want to keep, plus the pharmacies you use.
  • Prescription names, dosage, frequency, and whether you use brand or generic medicines. Share this through an agreed secure process.
  • Current coverage documents and notices from your employer or insurer.
  • Questions about premiums, medical and drug costs, referrals, travel, and coverage rules.
